WISP is a wireless
network: a network that allows you to connect to the
Internet and the Vancouver Island University local
area network via radio frequencies. It consists
of an "access point" or transceiver that sends
and receives data, literally through the air, to and
from computers equipped with wireless network cards.
Wireless networking is available throughout the Cowichan
Campus.
Use of the WISP wireless
network is limited to VIU students and employees,
and is subject to the terms and conditions specified
in Vancouver Island University’s Policy
45.01 - Use of Information Technology
To
access WISP, you will need a laptop computer running
Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000 or XP,Macintosh OS 9.x or X,
or Linux (Ubuntu, Redhat, SUSE) and a wireless network
card that supports the 802.11b (Wi-Fi) wireless networking
standard. See the options below
- If you have your own laptop computer,
you can buy and install your own wireless network
card
- If you have your own desktop
computer and want to connect to the wireless network,
you will need to purchase and install your own wireless
network card.
Whether
you buy your own card or borrow one from the Library
Service Desk, you will need to configure your laptop
to access the WISP network.
