Aboriginal Sports Management Program

This ten-course (two semester) certificate program was first delivered during the 2006/2007 academic year at the Cowichan campus to meet an immediate market need to support the delivery of the 2008 North American Indigenous Games (NAIG). The program provides a selection of courses that may lead participants to employment or further study in a variety of fields including sport, education, tourism, recreation or business.
The Aboriginal Sports Management Certificate program integrates traditional Western curriculum with key First Nations elements encompassing the inclusion of Elders, First Nations faculty, cultural traditions and protocols, and how to mix the traditions of the past with popular contemporary sports.
Laddering Opportunities
Credits earned for this certificate program may be applied to the 2nd-year Recreation and Sport Management Diploma and Tourism Studies Diploma. Students may also apply credit to the Event Management Certificate, offered entirely online and co-delivered by Vancouver Island University and Thompson Rivers University. Graduates of the diploma programs may ladder into the Bachelor of Tourism Management, Major in Recreation.
